Description :
To develop design strategies for all products and packaging that enhance product function and utility, enhance sales and marketing efforts, and meet company branding goals. To assist in the execution of the Wright Group/Publishing Group publishing plan by supervising the design of Pre K-High School educational publishing materials that meet market needs and company financial goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Product Development
Manage design development of educational materials that address the needs of teachers and students, from concept through completion
Develop design strategies that meet established product goals
Ensure products have a cohesive design identity and are consistent with company branding strategies
Ensure product design is consistent with product purpose and specifications
Work closely with the editors and designers to execute materials and ensure the art and design supports and enhances the print
Schedules and Work Flow
Coordinate project schedule and work flow with Managing Editor, Design Director, Editorial Manager, and Production Manager to ensure deadlines are met
Manage design process to ensure product quality and efficient project workflow
Research, evaluate and recommend new design technologies
Monitor outside design vendors and freelancers
Coordinate with manufacturing to ensure accurate communication of project specifications
Budget
Work with Design Director to develop design budgets
Manage design budgets within established guidelines
Prepare contracts for design, art, and photo services
Approve invoices, contracts, and PO within established budgets
Management/Supervisory
Manage design reports, including senior designers, designers, and freelance personnel
Set performance objectives and complete performance reviews with design personnel
Identify staffing needs and supervise staff hiring for assigned projects
Ensure design personnel are appropriately trained per their responsibilities
Contract and supervise freelance support
Work with department managers to create a positive and productive work environment for all department staff
Qualifications (knowledge, skills, and abilities):
Undergraduate degree in a related field
7-10 years production/design experience, preferably with an educational publisher focusing on K-6 education
3-5 years managerial experience
Familiarity with elementary classroom practices
Working knowledge and understanding of the publishing process, including design/production, editorial and manufacturing
Working knowledge of Macintosh computers, including all programs used.
Ability to work in a collaborative environment
Ability to manage and mentor project teams
Ability to manage project schedules and budgets
Ability to proactively and creatively solve problems related to the project including collaboration problems and solutions with management
Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet established deadlines
Excellent verbal communication skills
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Working knowledge of latest trends in educational and design markets
