The McGraw-Hill Companies has an immediate opening for a Production Editor to work in-house on a project basis in our Chicago office.
Responsibilities:
Help organize, schedule, attend, and participate in program development and meetings, including creating and updating workflows, schedules, and deadlines and overseeing the editorial quality control process for both print and technology products.
Attend all planning and status meetings and work with product teams to meet internal editorial deadlines and resolve scheduling issues; actively participate in the improvement of publishing tools and processes; collaborate in organizing and providing training for editorial staff on tasks involving software, including soft proofing, InCopy/AutoSpec, K4, and iPub
Gather, input, and revise iPub data for programs and products, including product detail and ISBN requests and cancellations.
Recruit, contract with, and manage copyediting and proofreading freelancers and vendors; work with managing editor to analyze expenditures and improve the monitoring and tracking of related budgets; copyedit and proofread when these activities are internally performed.
Organize and manage editorial components of all state-specific programs and reprints; collaborate in setting up and maintaining reprint files, including assuring completion of reprint requests by due-dates.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, education, product development, or a curriculum related to secondary literature and language arts publishing required; advanced degree or work toward an advanced degree preferred.
Two to four years editorial or editorial production experience in a high-volume publisher or development house.
Superior proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; aptitude for quickly developing proficiency in working with commercial and proprietary software tools including project management software and iPub.
Excellent communication, organizational skills, and problem-solving skills; ability to motivate and, as appropriate, lead teams in fulfilling responsibilities outlined above.
Ability to work efficiently, effectively, and calmly in high-pressure situations involving dozens of participants working toward tight deadlines.
