The Director of Public Affairs will provide communications advice and expertise on key advocacy issues and will work collaboratively with communications and governmental relations staff to develop and execute campaigns to advance the Association’s advocacy objectives and enhance the public’s understanding of the missions of medical schools and teaching hospitals. Key activities will include managing the association’s opinion research efforts, developing image and advocacy advertising, creating materials for print, online and broadcast venues, organizing and executing briefings and events, and leading and/or participating in communications campaigns with partner organizations as appropriate.
R equirements : 10 years’ experience in advocacy communications or public relations, preferably with a public relations or public affairs consulting firm or a major Washington, DC association. Must have a proven track record of strategic thinking and problem-solving, as well as demonstrated creativity and effectiveness in organizing and implementing integrated communications campaigns on complex issues. Must be able to distill complex and technical issues into understandable and persuasive communications and messages to advance the association’s advocacy agenda. Familiarity with health care and/or higher education issues strongly preferred. Ability to work collaboratively forge consensus, and manage high-profile projects in a fast-paced environment essential. Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, as well as sound judgment, diplomacy and tact required.
