The role of the Operations Architect is to assume primary responsibility and technical leadership for new technology projects and initiatives that are within the domain or highly inclusive of Technology Operations. Depending on project size, complexity, and scope, the Operations Architect may be the primary driver of the project or work in a collaborative fashion with applications and/or enterprise architects, Operations staff and project management.
A typical project will require that the architect handle a number of functions, from infrastructure requirements gathering to solutions envisioning and identification to senior level guidance and oversight of operations staff through implementation and production deployment. The architect is responsible for the overall quality and capabilities of delivered solutions.
Key areas of technical focus for the Operations Architect include:
- Network Infrastructure
- Storage Systems and backup technologies
- Systems w/ a variety of Operating Systems (Solaris, Linux, Windows) and their associated applications
- Operations Management (monitoring, change management, automation)
- Security
The Operations Architect is expected to be a technical leader within Technology Operations, providing guidance and mentoring for technical staff, guiding high visibility projects, staying abreast of industry trends/emerging technologies and their application, and providing solid solutions to the problems faced in a 24x7x365 environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Collaborate with Engineering department, Operations staff and Enterprise Architects through an application project's life cycle, specifically handling:
o Definition of operational requirements for new application systems and ensuring their adherence to established operations standards and industry best practices.
o Identification of infrastructure requirements and solutions (systems, storage, networking, 3rd party applications, etc). Communicate capabilities and/or limitations of said solutions.
o Identifying opportunities for the streamlining or enhancement of an application system through infrastructure based solutions.
o Cost and levels of effort for infrastructure solutions and their implementation
o Preparation of appropriate documentation - requirements, architectural diagrams, configuration.
* Work principally with Project Management and Technology staff through the envisioning, planning and design phases of a given project. Function in a highly consultative and supportive fashion through implementation, deployment, and initial operation. Act as the escalation point for project issues.
* Collaborate with operations staff across a myriad of technical groups to express project goals and identify appropriate solutions. Will require a high degree of interaction with engineers skilled in systems/storage administration, network administration, operations management/monitoring, and proprietary applications management. The Operations Architect strives to provide vision to the project participants, bringing them all to the same page so as to understand the purpose, value, and goal.
* Stay abreast of industry trends in various infrastructure technologies (networking, storage, systems, and Operations management). Identify opportunities for their application in streamlining, enhancing, and generally improving the manageability of compute environments. Own the technology selection process and vendor interaction.
* Participate in the Technology Architecture Review Board, providing operational perspective on new solutions or presenting new solutions as appropriate.
* Collaborate with Technology Operations staff and management to develop operational standards. Take a champion rule in pushing those standards and ensuring their incorporation.
* Strong understanding across a variety of infrastructure technologies, with demonstrated depth in 1 or more:
o Networking- enterprise logical and physical network organization, high throughput network appliances and their administration, load balancing, multi-site installations
o Applications/Systems - includes Windows, Solaris, and Linux operating systems and their associated services, understanding of physical computer architecture and the impacts it holds on application performance,
o Storage technologies - predominantly SAN, NAS and their usage in large scale application systems and a data farm environment
o Operations Management solutions based on established industry standards and methodologies (MOM, HP Open View, etc).
* Ability to rapidly deconstruct highly complex proprietary and 3rd party application systems, so as to determine operational and infrastructure requirements and identify areas improving resiliency, performance, and manageability, highlight scaling points, monitoring needs, etc.
* A conceptual understanding of application architecture and the SDLC process. The ideal individual will be conversant in basic application engineering/architecture principles (Object Oriented Design, database applications, Service Oriented Architecture) and the processes required for application development.
* Strong verbal communication skills w/ the ability to converse with both executive management and highly technical staff. Ability to provide concise and complete documentation through which systems are explained and implemented.
* An appreciation for and understanding of the complexities faced by a 24x7x365 high revenue operation. The ideal individual will have an operations background wherein they were part of an on-call rotation.
* Ability to seek out and optimize for operational efficiency and flexibility, while maintaining a 'big picture' point of view. A keen eye for the balance of cost vs. functionality.
Education and/or Experience:
* 10+ years overall IT/Operations experience
* 5+ years experience with complex, proprietary application systems and their general operation in a relevant technical role (Systems Engineer, Network Engineer, Operations Engineer)
* 2+ years acting in an architect capacity, driving operations projects and infrastructure design, establishing requirements and enterprise standards, leading the technology selection and implementation process
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
