PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide supervision and clinical direction to staff. To assist in the planning, direction, organization and control of functions in order to meet the patient care, research, and teaching needs of the medical center. To perform nutritional intervention for assigned patients of the Division of Nutrition Therapy.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supervision/Management
a. Provides supervision, mentoring and coaching of all assigned personnel.
b. Participates in the recruitment and selection process for candidates who are direct reports.
c. Coordinates work schedules for assigned clinical staff .
d. Coordinates clinical activities of assigned clinical staff. Convenes with them routinely to meet staffing needs and to assure continuity of care in all areas.
e. Ensures practice of assigned clinical staff conforms to local, state, and federal regulations and accrediting standards.
f. Ensures clinical competency of assigned clinical staff.
g. Conducts annual performance evaluation for each assigned employee.
h. Provides direct patient care as necessary
2. Clinical Practice
a. Applies in-depth knowledge of normal child growth and development and pediatric nutrition when performing nutritional assessments.
b. Anticipates implications of disease and therapy in the development of complex nutritional care plans. Utilizes existing or creates new nutrition standards of care.
c. Utilizing advanced understanding of nutritional interventions, the dietitian is cognizant of the impact of intervention and is able to recommend adjustments to meet the needs of the patient and family.
d. Individualizes nutrition counseling and education to meet the needs of the patients, families and care providers. Develops educational materials as needed.
e. Appropriately utilizes roles of team members in helping to initiate a coordinated plan of care.
f. Uses advanced knowledge of internal and external resources to support the nutrition plan of care in preparing the family for transition to home.
g. Utilizes in-depth knowledge and experience to critically evaluate those interventions that will be most successful in promoting positive outcome(s).
h. Incorporates current research into clinical practice. Shares information with peers.
3. Clinical Leadership
a. Identifies learning needs for nutrition staff, health care team members and community and initiates education activities to meet those needs.
b. Identifies and meets ongoing learning needs of diet technicians and/or interns as applicable.
c. Functions as a preceptor in orientation and education of new dietitians, as applicable.
d. Generates Performance Improvement activities and documents activities for reports.
e. Demonstrates awareness of professional time management and fiscal impact of recommendations for nutrition therapy in overall patient care.
4. Professional Growth
a. Assumes a responsible role on a committee and/or work group affecting the department, hospital and/or community.
b. Demonstrates in-depth knowledge (active learning) and personal experience in contributions to professional knowledge.
c. Assists other members by educating, providing resources and consulting on difficult cases.
5. Respect patient rights for informed consent and the handling of confidential information as defined by Cincinnati Children's mission and applicable laws and regulations. Review timeliness, accuracy, availability and security of information.
6. Perform routine procedures within respective discipline, including the collection and analysis of data that will affect decisions regarding patient care.
7. Provide services and consultation in a manner to be regularly and conveniently available to meet the needs of Cincinnati Children's patients as determined by department management and the medical staff.
8. Maintain currency in field through continuing education, literature and seminars. Implement this knowledge into the clinical nutrition area.
9. Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department discussions..
10. Ensure that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees, patients and families.
11. Attend required Cincinnati Children's training sessions, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogens and OSHA. Comply with Infection Control policies and procedures.
12. Participate in establishing job requirements and goals; perform duties at the desired level of competency.
13. Possess sound knowledge of procedures and regulations specific to the assessment and care of infants, children and adolescents.
14. Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Demonstrates advanced leadership skills. EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree in Dietetics or related field. Licensed with the Ohio Board of Dietetics. Masters Degree or specialty certification in relevant field preferred. Minimum three years progressively responsible experience. Prior experience within a complex medical center preferred.
