The McGraw-Hill ConstructionSenior Group Art Director leads design coordination, management, and quality assurance for all McGraw-Hill Construction Publications. The individual oversees the work of teams of designers dedicated to Engineering News Record, Architectural Record, and the regional publications, maintaining the highest graphic quality for the information conveyed while collaborating with management across MHC to continually elevate visual literacy and the improvement of processes and products. Additionally, theSenior Group Art Director may have operational responsibility for one publication or the development of special publications.
Coordination. Overseeing the visual display of content across all publications, and coordinating efforts of individual teams across the group. TheSenior Group Art Direct or will oversee the designers at AR, ENR, and the regional publications, who will report to him/her.
Publication Development. Insuring highest quality graphic presentation through ongoing analysis and review and hands-on development for MHC, including work on new products, including collaborating with Marketing and Prod Development to ensure brand consistency.
Talent development. Working with management, including the VP, Media Editorial, the VP, Group Publisher, and individual publishers, to hire and train new and current employees, motivating and leading them to achieve ever-increasing standards of excellence.
Standard Setting. Outlining, communicating, and maintaining the highest standards for visual content and presentation.
New Products. Creative development of new publications and ancillary products.
Strategic Vision. Working with management to set new directives and to develop recognition for current and future publications. A key requirement is the ability to increase the overall awareness of the excellence of all publications, through high standards and effective communication.
Electronic development. Work with Director of Digital Media to insure continuity and excellence, as well as relatedness, of print and electronic media. A separate design division will manage electronic design, in cooperation and coordination with the Senior Director, Group Design.
The construction publications generate yearly revenue of approximately $60,000,000. The successful visual content of the magazines and their Web components has a direct impact on the business via reader satisfaction, audience growth, and advertising revenues. The success of the end products (in this case magazines) is directly affected by the efforts of theSenior Group Art Dire ctor. The position is in charge of direct reports at each major publication group, as well as the prudent management of outside resources, such as commercial graphic design firms with budgets that may range from $10,000 to $50,000, including significant liaison with production.
 
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE :
TheSenior Group Art Director requires 10 years of successful operational responsibility as design or art director of a major national publication, including management responsibilities of others, budgets, and schedules.
As the graphic conscience of the publication group, the position demands powerful graphic skills, vision, and complete graphic fluency in contemporary graphic design tools and applications. Comprehensive publication design experience is essential. In order to insure excellence in all stages of the printed product, thorough knowledge of all phases of magazine production, from desktop design and pre-press production, through the 4/c Web offset printing process is required.
As a coordinator and leader of others, the Senior Director, Group Design must have 10 years experience as an effective manager of people, with emphasis on talent development and staffing requirements.
As a leading representative of the publications, the Senior Director, Group Design must have strong communications skills.
The individual must have demonstrable programmatic, scheduling, and budgetary skills, such as managing the redesign budget for a given publication or group of publications.
The Director must have fluency in the latest software development for graphic purposes and be capable of deploying them across the media.
The Senior Director, Group Design must be able to establish a strong identity within the national graphics design community to heighten knowledge and appreciation for MHC products, through associations such as ASME, the Society of Publication Designers and the AIGA.
Comparative evaluations. TheSenior Group Art Director will oversee the graphic presentation of print and electronic products to insure design excellence, creative quality, and set standards of applications for others.
Staff Development. TheSenior Group Art Director works with management to assess current design staffs for appropriate talent and fit for additional responsibilities and collaborations within the group. The director develops the graphic expertise of current production and design staffs to meet the group’s highest standards.
Brand Recognition. The individual reviews and evaluates new and existing collateral products for consistency and high standards, to assure critical brand recognition for the group.
Extending group collaborations. Obtains internal cooperation for group projects through building cooperative structures across all publications for the benefit of the group. Manages and motivates teams and resources for the group.
