Position Description
Numerical Control Multiple Tool and Milling Machine Operators in this position will: Set up, operate and adjust numerically controlled single or multiple tool milling machines using all forms of control media, program documents, holding fixtures and cutting tools and/or by manually operating or entering any required data to machine to quality requirements anything the machines are, or may be adapted to machine. Employment in this position also requires lifting and pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds, rotation of head/neck, bending and twisting at the waist, walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, grasping, sitting, flexion/extension, use of low impact vibratory tools, contact with metals, exposure to noise, dusts and fumes, shaking objects and surfaces, and the use of personal safety gear for face/eyes, hand/arm, ears and feet. Prepare to set-up job (e.g. production orders, first lots, tape tryouts) by reviewing hot list, work order, tie-in sheets, operator's or setup documents and drawings. Ensure that the correct work order, drawings, operator documents, and part(s) are at the machine for the material to be worked. Ensure that the tools or fixtures are free from visible defects. Move material/parts and fixtures by using overhead crane, electric stacker and pallet jacks, as required. Check machine set-up and/or parts completed by previous operator to determine progress on a job, as required, and ensure safe working conditions. Select machine accessories (e.g. vises, fixtures, pins, chucks, collar, probes). Verify that machine is in good condition. Identify fixtures, or templates to be used. Locate part on Numerically Controlled Manufacturer Fixture (NCMF), and/or on vacuum fixture, using index pins, or hold down pins/clamps, as required. Turn on vacuum line, and remove hold down pins as required. Retrieve and download Numerical Control (NC) programs to machine controller using computing equipment and downloading from various servers/data bases. Select and check cutters/drills per program or NC documents. Ensure cutters/drills are the correct type, length, diameter, and are sharp and in good condition. Replace worn, chipped, and defective tools, check/adjust overall tool length by using a height gauge and hand tools, as required. Load and unload tools, following program information and set-up documents, using hand tools (e.g. wrenches, mallets, spanners) into Automatic Tool Changer (ATC), using appropriate safety equipment, as required. Set machine coordinates or index points per NC documents including cutter offset/compensations, tool heights, and probes, using controller keyboard, as required. Operate the machine to cut/drill holes (e.g., pilot holes, rough/detail, periphery cuts), in various detail parts as required. Monitor machine settings (e.g., machine speed, feed rate) and adjust as necessary to correct machining problems or to prepare for next operation in sequence. Perform minor editing of programs per shop requirements, as required. Monitor machine during operation for unusual vibration or sounds, watch machine gauges and controller display or digital readout for warnings, visually check cutter/drill path, clearance, chips, to ensure smooth operation.

Competencies
Use math that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals and fractions. Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints. Capable of visualizing a three-dimensional shape from a two-dimensional view, converting left-hand to right-hand views and understanding symbols, flag notes, general notes and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Determine if own work is complete and correct as specified by instructions, drawings and specifications. Operate computing equipment to access job information such as, drawings, specifications and other online information systems. Operate computing equipment to perform job tasks such as, uploading or downloading programs. Must have knowledge of the coordinate system to identify multiple machine axes . Operate man aboard electric stackers in a safe manner. Follow oral/written instructions provided by the lead, team leader, supervisor and/or engineering. Use various types of hand tools and/or hand-held power tools. Must have knowledge of the proper use, handling and disposal of hazardous materials. Use various jigs and fixtures to orient parts into pre-defined positions for part fabrication and assembly. 'Think before acting,' be able to anticipate outcome of an action, know if something looks wrong and ask questions when necessary. Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures and machinability of materials such as, cutting speed and feed rates for material being machined. Set-up and operate various conventional and or numerically controlled machines (NC) to fabricate close tolerance, high quality parts. Visualize complete machining process in order to create proper and safe setups and machining procedures. Operate overhead cranes in a safe manner. Use various types of precision measuring tools. Knowledge of safe working practices, emergency procedures and possible dangerous situations. Understand Statistical Process Control (SPC) applications and interpretation of statistical results. Skilled in the selection, set-up and operation of the appropriate tool(s) for a given type of work. Work alone/independently. Coordinate daily tasks with others to align priorities for smooth operation of joint workloads.

Education and/or Experience
High school graduate or GED preferred. 1 - 2 years vocational training and/or equivalent work experience preferred. Machinist apprenticeship preferred.
