Position Description
Mechanics in this job perform close tolerance rework on aircraft or aircraft parts. Collaborate with engineering to solve problems. Design & fabricate custom tools & fixtures where tools do not work or exist. Employment in this position also requires standing, twisting & bending at the waist, walking, carrying & lifting less than 10 pounds, climbing/balancing, handling, rotation of head/neck, contact with metals, exposure to noise, atmospheric conditions & elevated platforms, & the use of personal safety gear for face/eye, hand/arm, ears & feet. Receive work assignment from various sources coordinate with shop & work priority rejection tags. Locate area to be worked using drawings, IP (Installation Plan), W/O (Work Order), or other paperwork that specifies airplane number, section number, & three point location. Obtain appropriate drawings, Boeing (BAC) specification, documents and/or sketches, using online computing systems, as required. Ensure that correct part numbers & quantity of kitted (pre-picked) or hand picked detail parts, standards & assemblies were issued/selected, by comparing to IP and/or BOM (Bill Of Materials) on drawing. Make sure parts issued are free of visible defects. If parts are not pre-picked, get parts specified from Parts Control Area (PCA), satellite storage carts, roto bin, or other location as required. Ensure that parts selected are effective for the airplane & are free of visible defects. Operate mechanical lifts of various types as required, to locate parts/assemblies into position or to perform assembly work. Locate parts on airplane using reference points such as tooling holes, K holes, or by hand per drawing, O&IR, & tooling instructions. Set up assembly tools per tooling instructions or drawing, as required. Make sure all locators are correct for particular model configuration. Design custom drills, reamers to perform a given task & fill out tool grind request orders, as required. Fabricate detail parts from raw stock to meet repair or modification requirements. Drill, ream, & countersink full size holes in parts/assemblies in sequence & to correct size using drill motor, Winslow, 90-degree power vane, and/or Quackenbush. Set countersinking tools to proper depth, as required. Apply sealant, alodine, primer, adhesives, as required by W/O, IP, or Boeing (BAC) specifications. Operate conventional milling & lathe machines to fabricate custom shop aids as required. Mill or trim clearance on aircraft parts per engineering disposition, as required. Perform various types of single point boring & line hone operations. Verify tool is properly set up per tool usage instruction sheet prior to boring, complete per engineering disposition/IP. Cold work or form various types of aluminum by peening per (BAC) specifications, as required. Repair oversized or crooked holes per Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) & Boeing (BAC) specifications. Fabricate one of a kind boring & milling fixtures to perform close tolerance machining on an aircraft where conventional equipment can not be used. Design, fabricate & operate one of a kind router fixtures for routing on aircraft or aircraft parts where existing tools will not work or are damaged. Check work after completion of each operation and/or completed job to ensure it is complete per drawing, there are no defects & area around job is clean, prior to putting up for inspection. Submit completed job or in-process checks, as required, to inspector at appropriate steps in sequence. Perform rework as required. Write removals as required. Consult with lead/supervisor and/or others on process or job related issues as required. Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in approved manner (per Material Safety Data Sheets) using personal protective equipment as required. Maintain a written tie-in book; communicate with other shifts. Maintain personal and tool certifications.

Competencies
Operate computing equipment to access job information (e.g., drawings, blueprints, specifications and other online information systems). Knowledge of the coordinate system to identify multiple axes (e.g., X,Y,Z) and airplane dimensional references (e.g., buttock, water and station lines). Drill, ream, hone, bore, lap and/or countersink straight and close tolerance holes. Use mathematics including practical math, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Read and interpret engineering drawings. Capable of visualizing a three-dimensional shape from a two-dimensional view, converting left-hand to right-hand views and understanding symbols, flag notes, general notes and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Use various types of hand tools and/or hand-held power tools. Make basic layouts on parts or assemblies in order to establish reference points and to check dimensions. Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures and machinability of materials (e.g., cutting speed and feed rates for material being machined). Work with others as part of a team which includes giving and receiving feedback, assisting others in completion of tasks; possess interpersonal, listening, and participation skills. Understand the application of technical documents/information such as BAC specifications, manufacturing plans and safety information. Use various types of floor-mounted power tools (e.g. bandsaw, grinder, drill press, disk sander). Use various types of precision measuring tools. Effectively communicate written information such as tie-ins, reports and/or required documentation. Maintain and update records. Knowledge of aircraft systems such as flight controls, power distribution, hydraulics, pneumatics, auxiliary power, proximity switch electronics, fueling, electronic engine control, and oxygen to enable performance of functional tests and other assigned tasks. Knowledge of safe working practices, emergency procedures and possible dangerous situations. Skilled in the selection, set-up and operation of the appropriate tool(s) for a given type of work. Effectively communicate verbal information such as tie-ins and job related information. Work alone/independently. Coordinate daily tasks with others to align priorities for smooth operation of joint workloads. Mechanical ability, manual dexterity, and hand/eye coordination required to perform various projects, per drawings, sketches, and verbal or written instructions. Organize, plan, and sequence work efficiently. Knowledge of proper use, handling and disposal of hazardous materials per government regulations and Boeing procedures. Think before acting, (e.g., anticipate outcome of an action, know if something looks wrong) and ask questions when necessary. Determine if own work is complete and correct as specified by instructions, drawings and specifications. Follow oral/written instructions provided by the lead, team leader, supervisor and/or engineering

Education and/or Experience
High school graduate or GED required
