Position Description
International Space Station Systems Safety Engineer. The candidate selected for this position will be expected to perform and coordinate the preparation of safety analyses and safety related tasks including, but will not necessarily be limited to the following: Identification of applicable safety requirements, providing guidance to implementing disciplines for application of safety requirements and control of potential hazards. Conduct of hazard analysis of design and planned operations to identify potential hazards and their causes, evaluate hazard controls, and track hazard closure. Preparation, including coordination with the customer, of Hazard Reports/Safety Assessment Reports and other safety documents. Review of design, engineering analysis and test data to evaluate compliance with system safety requirements and adequacy of hazard controls. Participation in safety working groups, design, and operations readiness reviews. Scheduling of safety document submittals. Review of safety analysis and documents prepared by other safety engineers. The selected candidate is expected to apply an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify a lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions. Evaluate customer/operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces. Perform various analyses to optimize total system of systems and/or system architecture. Resolve cross-functional technical issues. Work under general direction.

Extensive knowledge of the engineering/scientific principles with particular emphasis on the aerospace/aeronautical disciplines ( e.g., aerodynamics, propulsion, orbital mechanics, structures, material properties, weight and balance, systems, human factors and interfaces, signature, etc.) and their impact on configuration development. Familiarity with classes of aerospace vehicles (e.g., aircraft, launch systems, spacecraft, helicopters). Knowledge of aerospace infra-structure and supportability issues (e.g., runways, ground support, carrier suitability, launch vehicle complexes, etc.), environment (e.g., thermal, electromagnetics, contamination, etc.) and operations (cycle time, accessibility, mission sequencing, turn time, maintenance, etc.).

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry and typically 9 to 13 years experience in an engineering classification or either a Master's degree with 7 to 11 years experience or a PhD degree with 4 to 8 years experience in an engineering classification. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
