GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Designs, provides, and instructs Adult Basic Education/Adult Secondary Education (ABE/ASE). Prepares inmates for GED testing. Develops training plans, course curriculum, lesson plans, training scripts, student handouts, and course materials. Direct supervision of inmates in group and one-on-one settings. Conducts assessments, evaluations, and educational case planning; and develops specialized curricula as needed. Assigns tasks, demonstrates techniques and advises on improvement of performance. Confers with other staff members, specialists, consultants and members of the case management team. Corrects tests and workbook papers and scores tests. Performs inmate performance evaluations and assures inmate payroll deadlines are met. Provides evaluative feedback on software programs designed to assist in GED preparation. Plans, organizes and schedules times, dates, facilities and locations for inmate classes. Develops a variety of student handouts including supplemental reading material, programmed learning devices, problems, self quizzes, etc. Performs course evaluation to determine effectiveness and to determine changes to present educational approaches to enhance and refine teaching. Assists other agency personnel in determining their specific teaching needs and in developing approaches to satisfy the needs. Participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings as they relate to case load. Responsible for database and education file entries and updating for case load. Completes academic progress reports on time schedules. Contributes data for facility reports. May instruct other inmate courses to reduce recidivism risks. Knowledge of basic regulations and practices associated with prison emergency activities; knowledge of basic instructional and training and practices; knowledge of life-span learning. Skill in public speaking; skill in training; skill in lesson planning and visual aid preparation. Responsible for Tool control and classification, inventory, inmate count, escorting of inmates between classes and units, classroom management, and discipline. Enrollment of students into all courses taught. Conduct CONFLICT checks on all students. Maintenance of inmate records and files, weekly maintenance of WCIS data system, including grades. Supervision of inmates in groups, and one-on-one settings. Keep up to date on all new technology in the assigned fields. Assist with other security functions as needed. Administration of oral, written, or performance tests in order to measure progress of students, and to evaluate the instructors teaching effectiveness. Must be aware of security issues at all times. Maintain current Wyoming Teacher Certification. Obtain a minimum of 40 hours In Service training annually.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsible for instruction and supervision of inmate students to include development of lesson plans, attendance, count, file maintenance, establishment of a supportive learning environment, and classroom management; develop quarterly individual learning plans for all inmate based on assessment and progress, plans will be reviewed regularly and maintained in the education files; develop and administer oral, written, and/or performance tests; maintain all monthly, bi-monthly, weekly, daily, and yearly reporting which will include, but may not be limited to attendance, class rosters, tool inventories, graduation rates, referrals to other programs, and grant monies expenditures; research new technologies, curriculum, labor trends, and techniques to be implemented into the classroom, and curriculum development.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Skill in conducting classes and demonstrations to teach principles, techniques,
procedures, and or methods of designated subjects; skill in developing curricula, course content, course goals and methods of instruction; skill in preparing outlines of instructional programs and training schedules; ability to maintain files, attendance records, make referrals to other programs and respond to inmate requests; ability to participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to remain up-to-date with developments in the field and integrate relevant information into programs; skill in adapting teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs, abilities, and interests; ability to administer oral, written or performance tests in order to measure progress and to evaluate training effectiveness; ability to manage inmates; knowledge of computers and the use of different programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint; skill in verbal communication and work with individuals with a variety of personalities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Education PLUS possession of or proof of ability to secure a Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board Certificate.
