General This is an opportunity to develop technically and as a leader, and to get exposure to other GE businesses. Engineers have project responsibility, participate in all aspects of design and direct other off-site engineers. We design the control systems for marine and industrial (M&I) engines. M&I engines are shaft-power adaptations of gas turbines used for military and commercial aviation. M&I Control Systems is a small team responsible for five major engine families with over 20 models. The simplest of these engines runs like a flight engine with a single annular combustor (SAC) burning liquid fuel. However, much more is done to generate clean, fuel-efficient power for marine and industrial applications, which drive electric generators, water jets, propellers and gas compressors. These engines burn natural gas, diesel, jet fuel, naphtha and low-BTU hydrogen fuels. They burn one fuel, switch between different fuels or burn multiple fuels simultaneously. Power can be increased by injecting water or by placing an intercooler between the booster and compressor. Emissions are reduced by carefully controlling both fuel and air in the combustor. This is done by using multiple annular rings of fuel nozzles in the combustor and, in many cases, controlling segments within these rings. This combustor "staging" is combined with bleed-air control to optimize fuel burn. This strategy is known as dry low emissions (DLE). Water injection is another (wet) approach used to limit emissions. Team members work directly with Engine Systems, Project, packagers and control system suppliers in a fast-paced, short-cycle environment to develop requirements, design the control system, specify hardware, interface and software requirements, and qualify the control system to these requirements. We work closely with GE Energy and GE Oil & Gas.
