Position Description
Operate cab-controlled overhead traveling crane to lift, move, lower and precisely position large aircraft parts and assemblies, raw stock, equipment and assemblies in storage, heavy machinery, dies, jigs, etc. Guide the movements of cab-controlled overhead cranes by visible or audible signals. Select, secure and adjust suitable chains, cables, slings, hooks and other lifting and securing devices to properly load and balance a variety of large assemblies, tools, equipment and other items being moved and positioned by overhead cab cranes. Communicate move status with management, shop leads, scheduling dispatchers, share knowledge, advise and communicate skills information with other employees.
Competencies
Check condition of the crane and associated equipment before and after operation and report required maintenance. Report malfunctioning and unsafe equipment. Familiarize and share knowledge with new employees on equipment and procedures. Coordinate and develop safety processes related to overhead crane operations. Use math that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals and fractions. Operate computing equipment to access job information (e.g., drawings, specifications and other online information systems). Follow oral/written instructions provided by tooling personnel, shop personnel, dispatcher, lead or supervisor. Operate overhead cranes in a safe manner. Knowledge of correct lifting and rigging procedures such as the selection and inspection of the appropriate slings, cables or chains, to ensure proper handling and distribution of weight when using lifting devices for overhead cranes. Calculate safe load requirements prior to lifting so as not to exceed lift capacity. Work with others as part of a team which includes giving and receiving feedback, assisting others in completion of tasks; possess interpersonal, listening, and participation skills. Effectively communicate written information such as tie-ins, planning or engineering change requests and reports. Participate in overhead crane safety improvement projects and activities as needed.
Education and/or Experience
High School Diploma or GED required. Prefer crane certificate or 3 years technical background in crane operations.
