Position Description
Lead Systems Engineer to provide System Architecture leadership for a GMD Systems Engineering & Integration team. The Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) System is the first missile defense program deployed operationally to defend the homeland against ballistic missile attacks conducted by terrorists or rogue states. The system provides early detection and tracking during the boost phase, midcourse target discrimination, precision intercept and destruction of inbound ICBMs through force of hit-to-kill technology. Extensive ground and flight tests have demonstrated the system's successful performance against long-range ballistic missile targets. Responsible for defining, documenting, and managing the GMD System Architecture in support of the design, development, and integration of the GMD Element. Position responsibilities include leadership for documenting current GMD architecture and capabilities, assessing system performance and identifying capability shortfalls, identifying architecture alternatives for new capabilities, conducting sensitivity analyses and trade studies, and establishing a forward path for GMD system development. Position requires interfacing with GMD Product Teams to ensure a thorough review of GMD architecture and with Missile Defense National Team to ensure integration of BMDS and GMD architectures. The successful candidate will employ a comprehensive knowledge of System Architecture tools, processes, and products to assess current and planned system architectures and interfaces and postulate alternative approaches that improve system effectiveness in terms of performance, cost, risk mitigation, flexibility, and robustness.
