Senior Optical Mechanical Engineer, Hardware Platforms Group
Microsoft Hardware is looking for a Senior Optical Mechanical Engineer to help design the future of consumer electronics.
As a successful candidate, you are charged-up by leading system-level and sub-system designs through fast-paced product development cycles. A strong mix of technical breadth and vision allow you to work cross-functionally to tie electronics, optics, software and mechanical assemblies into compelling consumer experiences. You are highly motivated and enjoy bringing technical and tactical leadership to cross-disciplinary teams. Walking into a large retail store and selecting a product that you've taken from concept and detailed design into high-volume manufacture drives and excites you.
Your work experience includes a minimum of eight years of opto-mechanical product design, with at least five years in the area of consumer electronics. This includes designing parts for a wide variety of high volume manufacturing processes such as: injection molding, die casting, stamping/forming and machining. You are knowledgeable with various plastic resins, metal alloys and part decoration and finishing processes.
A track record of innovation and experience in selecting material and components to achieve cost targets is desired. The establishment of specifications and written test plans, including the development of test procedures to verify your optical and mechanical designs are integral to the position.
An ability to manage complex projects and CM's, against development timeline needs, is required, and your excellent communication skills allow you to work seamlessly with teams across various engineering functions and geographies. As such, you are willing to travel internationally at times to support design and manufacturing activities.
Qualification Summary:
M.S. Mechanical engineering, optics, physics, electrical engineering or related technical discipline.
Eight years of product development experience, with at least five years designing high-volume consumer electronic devices, including successfully developing and leading at least two high-volume consumer products into manufacture.
Extensive experience designing complex assemblies of injection molded parts for high volume manufacture.
In-depth knowledge of optical and mechanical tolerance analysis.
Eight years of industry optical design experience with both sequential and non-sequential ray-tracing packages.
Project lead experience (using internal or external contract design resources) on at least two consumer electronics products that successfully reached volume production.
Expert know-how with a common engineering CAD package (ProE Wildfire 2.0 a plus).
