GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety, and provides offenders with secure and humane treatment that gives them every opportunity for rehabilitation. As part of that rehabilitation, the Field Services Division is responsible for overseeing case management of probationers and parolees to facilitate their reintegration into society. Probation and Parole Agents will receive an extensive new agent training program, along with a commitment to professional development through ongoing training, and career advancement through promotional opportunities and receive the 20-year Law Enforcement Retirement plan.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position is responsible for the maintenance, surveillance and supervision of a caseload of adult probationers and parolees. Interviews, evaluates and conducts investigations into offender's background and criminal history to determine their individual needs and risk, creates case plans designed around those factors and documents all contact with offenders in the case management system; provides the courts, boards, institutions and other states with offender progress reports, violation reports and recommendations; interviews victims & insurance companies to determine victim losses and makes collateral contracts with outside sources to verify information; investigates possible supervision violations; conducts searches and seizures of evidence; provides weekly testimony in court, as applicable; conducts compliance visits to offender's home and job site; monitors urine sample collections used to determine if offenders violate substance abuse requirements; collections of schedules and other probation related services. This position requires early morning, night and weekend hours; year-round travel; and working with high risks offenders with limited supervision.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of human behavior, crisis behavior, and substance use, abuse and addiction; knowledge of criminal justice system, department policies and procedures; knowledge of criminal and legal law; knowledge of procedures used in criminal justice agencies and cognitive behavior programs. Skills in oral and written communication; organization; time management; group facilitation; and problem solving. Ability to be a positive role-model for offenders; to make good decisions in highly stressful situations; to engage others in innovative solutions; create and implement new concepts and ideas; and to motivate others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, sociology, psychology, criminal justice or administration of justice or closely related field.
NOTE: Positions in this class will require a background information check, INCLUDING the taking of fingerprints, which will be completed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Family Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, for every successful applicant.
Candidates will be subject to background and reference investigation and shall be required to submit to urinalysis testing to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
