MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Perform the duties and responsibilities of a Clinical Laboratory Specialist I.
2.Perform assigned technical procedures in the section; follow standard operating protocols.
3.Identify technical and patient related problems or discrepancies. Notify appropriate laboratory personnel and assist with investigation and documentation of the resolution.
4.Operate instruments; perform performance checks, calibrations, preventative maintenance, basic troubleshooting from written guidelines.
5.Perform and report Quality Control procedures. Identifies Q.C. failures. Report problems and assist appropriate personnel with troubleshooting and documentation of the resolution.
6.Participate in competencies and proficiency testing, performance improvement programs and continuing education.
7.Prepare sample for analysis. Store and preserve specimen. Prepare reagents, assist with the monitoring supply inventories, receive and stock supplies.
8.Perform specimen registration using the Hospital Information System.
9.Perform registration, phlebotomy and catheterization.
10.Instruct and train students, new and fellow employees and medical residents on bench procedures and protocols.
11.Conduct, direct or assist in special projects, evaluations, experiments or research.
12.Participate in regularly scheduled crosstrained rotation and demonstrate continued competency in various sections of the Clinical Laboratory.
13.Perform routine operational functions such as scheduling, inventory control, and time sheets.
14.Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
15.Rotate on an on-call schedule when necessary and/or appropriate. Rotate weekend and holiday schedules as required. Cover shifts other that scheduled when below minimum staffing or heavy workload.
16.Respect patient rights for informed consent and the handling of confidential information as defined by Cincinnati Children's mission and applicable laws and regulations. Review timeliness, accuracy, availability and security of information.
17.Perform routine procedures within respective discipline, including the collection and analysis of data which will affect decisions regarding patient care.
18.Provide services and consultation in a manner to be regularly and conveniently available to meet the needs of Cincinnati Children's patients as determined by department management and the medical staff.
19.Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department discussions.
20.Ensure that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees, patients and families. Attend required Cincinnati Children's training sessions, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogens and OSHA. Comply with Infection Control policies and procedures.
21.Participate in establishing job requirements and goals; perform duties at the desired level of competency.
22.Conform to departmental and Cincinnati Children's policies.
23.Understands, adheres to and models Core Standards as defined organizationally and specifically within the department/unit.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Capable of relating to diverse age and demographic backgrounds. Professional knowledge and clinical ability sufficient to provide routine and complex analysis for multiple areas of the Clinical Laboratory. Demonstrate an independent work initiative, sound judgement, diplomacy and a professional demeanor. Possess sound knowledge of procedures and regulations specific to the assessment and care of infants, children and adolescents. Capable of bending, lifting and standing; demonstrate physical ability to perform necessary tasks.
EDUCATION\WORK EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Physical Science or equivalent combination of education, training and experience required. Minimum 2 years' experience in Clinical Laboratory testing preferred.
