Deputy Warden (Class Code:LE13-14420) CLOSING DATE: 09/02/2008 FULL HIRING RANGE: $5604.00 - $7396.00 Per Month AGENCY HIRING RANGE: $5,604.00 - $6,431.00 Per Month DEPARTMENT: Department of Corrections, Prisons, Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution LOCATION: Torrington GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Assists the institution director and acts in his/her absence to assure effective operation and management of correctional programs in a medium to large size correctional facility; responsible for administration of day-to-day business activities including financial, contractual, purchase of goods and services, personnel, medical assistance, maintenance support, data processing and information management, prison industries, public relations and other related activities; supervises the work activities of staff personnel and other employees with administrative or corrections support program responsibilities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Deputy Warden must ensure all programs are managed in accordance with state and federal statutes, department policy/procedures, correctional standards and best practices. The Deputy Warden will have direct supervisory responsibility over all department heads under his or her direction: security, medical, business, food service, warehouse, records, classification/housing, maintenance, prison industry etc. The Deputy Warden's number one priority is to maintain the safety and security of both staff and inmate alike. His or her role will be to ensure the daily operations of the facility are run in an orderly/professional fashion. The Deputy Warden must have the knowledge and ability to perform under pressure and to make sound decisions in emergency situations. This individual will be responsible for the day-to-day operations that included the following: security concerns, treatment/education, team meetings and make operation recommendations and decisions as the chair person of the classification and housing committee. He or she must ensure inmate conflicts are recorded and procedures are in place to help resolve these issues. The Deputy Warden must make daily rounds throughout the institution (MBWA) to discuss, observe, staff and inmate's morale and general concerns. It is the responsibility of the Deputy Warden to have daily direct communication with his supervisor (Warden). KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of unit management concepts; skill in interpersonal communications; skill in team building and problem resolution; ability to manage and supervise staff and inmates; knowledge of human relations; knowledge of institutional health standards and corrections training programs; ability to identify and correct inappropriate inmate behavior; knowledge of educational and recreational programs; skill in oral and written communication. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, education, sociology, social work or closely related field, PLUS five years of professional work experience in correctional security, counseling persons with behavioral or orientation problems or correctional education, INCLUDING at least two years with program supervisory management responsibilities.
