Position Description
Member of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) Specialty Engineering Team responsible for GMD compliance with program level Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) requirements. Provide E3 subject matter support to GMD product teams including design reviews, test planning and execution and requirements verification. Additional areas of responsibility include inter and intra system compatibility, the effect on systems and structures from lightning, static charge, and un-natural events and/or threats. Applies Boeing best practices and makes enhancements to processes and methods when necessary. Recommends technical solutions to identified issues and frequently presents findings and solutions to management. Translates contract requirements into work requirements, processes, and tasks. Works under the guidance of more senior staff members as required. This position requires: A current or the ability to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance. Experience identifying the factors affecting electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of electronic and electrical systems. Ability to apply design techniques and design features to control electromagnetic (EM) emissions (intentional and un-intentional) and susceptibilities. Experience in EMI/EMC test planning and execution and familiar with MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464. Also familiar with HEMP (MIL-STD-2169B and MIL-STD-188-125-1/2), lightning protection requirements (NFPA 780), ESD (IEC 61000-4-2). Experience with systems engineering tools (e.g., DOORS). Experience with DoD missile defense programs.

Applies knowledge of systems engineering methods, computer aided analysis and modeling, and empirical test results, design principles and requirements throughout the design and review process for internal and external designs to ensure applicable operational and functional objectives are achieved. Ability to optimize system and component design through a variety of methods, such as trade studies, in order to meet design goals (such as safety, producibility, and maintainability) by implementing alternative system approaches, architectures, and system-level attributes, while ensuring that EEE requirements are achieved. Ability to apply electromagnetic theory to develop new electromagnetic environmental effects mitigation techniques and technologies.

Complete knowledge of electromagnetic theory and requirements used to review, interpret, and integrate technical data (such as design details, test results, and analysis) from internal and external sources to verify product performance.
[ + ] Electromagnetic Theory

Complete knowledge of electromagnetic field, circuit theory, and wave propagation. Knowledge of interaction of electromagnetic waves with materials and geometries in a variety of mediums. Mediums include natural (such as rain, solar flares, dust, temperature) and man made environments (such as radar, broadcast stations, nuclear electromagnetic pulse). Ability to define electromagnetic fields using mathematical language to assess systems, sub-systems and component behavior.

Education and/or Experience
Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's and 5 or more years' experience, Master's degree with 3 or more years' experience or PhD degree with experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
