Position Description
Member of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) Specialty Engineering Team responsible for GMD compliance with specified natural and induced environments. Provide survivability subject matter support to GMD product teams including design reviews, trade-studies, test planning and execution and requirements verification. Applies Boeing best practices and makes enhancements to processes and methods when necessary. Translates contract requirements into work requirements, processes, and tasks. Recommends technical solutions to identified issues, prepares technical reports and briefs management and customers. The candidate will also be responsible to mentor more junior survivability personnel. Travel to remote sites, domestic and abroad, may be required. This position requires: A current Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance and the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance. Experience identifying the factors affecting electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of electronic and electrical systems. Ability to apply design techniques and design features to control electromagnetic (EM) susceptibility to natural and induced environments. Broad experience with HEMP (MIL-STD-2169B and MIL-STD-188-125-1/2) requirements and with MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464 and lightning protection requirements (MIL-STD-310, NFPA 780), ESD (IEC 61000-4-2). Experience with systems engineering tools (e.g., DOORS). Experience with DoD missile defense programs.
Competencies
General/Leadership
[ + ] Systems Thinking
Evaluates job tasks and processes on how well they help meet team objective(s); identifies non-value-adding components and barriers. Formulates change strategies; seeks input from others to evaluate options for change and encourage buy-in. Makes appropriate changes to job/role structures and processes by communicating effectively and focusing on new skill development. Uses accurate measurement systems to monitor the implementation.
Technical
[ + ] Analytical Skills
Skill and ability to: collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources at the department level.
[ + ] EEE Design
Complete knowledge of electromagnetic theory to ensure Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and protect against electromagnetic threats (such as High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF), lightning direct and indirect effects, Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), and precipitation static). Applies knowledge of systems engineering methods, computer aided analysis and modeling, and empirical test results, design principles and requirements throughout the design and review process for internal and external designs to ensure applicable operational and functional objectives are achieved. Ability to optimize system and component design through a variety of methods, such as trade studies, in order to meet design goals (such as safety, producibility, and maintainability) by implementing alternative system approaches, architectures, and system-level attributes, while ensuring that EEE requirements are achieved. Ability to apply electromagnetic theory to develop new electromagnetic environmental effects mitigation techniques and technologies.
[ + ] EM Verification & Validation
Complete knowledge of electromagnetic theory and requirements used to review, interpret, and integrate technical data (such as design details, test results, and analysis) from internal and external sources to verify product performance.
[ + ] Electromagnetic Theory
Complete knowledge of electromagnetic field, circuit theory, and wave propagation. Knowledge of interaction of electromagnetic waves with materials and geometries in a variety of mediums. Mediums include natural (such as rain, solar flares, dust, temperature) and man made environments (such as radar, broadcast stations, nuclear electromagnetic pulse). Ability to define electromagnetic fields using mathematical language to assess systems, sub-systems and component behavior.
Education and/or Experience
Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's and 5 or more years' experience, Master's degree with 3 or more years' experience or PhD degree with experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
