GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Manages the security functions of a correctional facility, insuring employee, inmate, visitor and community safety and security. Provides direction and guidance to security staff. Ensures the protection of staff and inmates in accordance with WDOC mission, policy and procedure. Directly supervises lieutenants and sergeants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsible for the security operations on a shift and assist watch commanders with security functions. Supervises correctional staff in general and directly supervises shift commanders, lieutenants, inmate visiting, transport, supply and property staff; trains correctional and other staff in security practices and procedures; schedules security staff compliment to meet institutional needs; reviews and corrective action. Incumbent will work a rotating schedule.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Leadership and management skills; interpersonal skills; written and oral communication skills including ability to communicate parameters and work cooperatively with staff, other agency officials, law enforcement officials, inmates and inmate families, and the public; ability to give or receive direction in a professional manner; skill in problem identification and resolution. Knowledge of Wyoming Department of Correction's policies, procedures and practices, general correctional management principles, and prison dynamics including inmate behaviors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED, 18 years old or older and an US citizen, plus seven years of work experience in correctional security including four years at a Correctional Lieutenant or Sergeant level of responsibility.
Candidates must successfully pass background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, Physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen and other pre-employment testing prior to appointment. All successful candidates will be required to complete an initial training period and become POST Certified within one year of initial appointment.
