DEPARTMENT: Department of Corrections, Prisons, Wyoming Womens Center
LOCATION: Lusk
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Serves as shift leader; acts as a resource person for staff and inmates; directs, instructs, counsels and trains security personnel; carries out tasks requiring good judgment and creative effort to preserve health, safety and security of all persons within the institution; assures basic documents of record and scheduling are prepared in a correct and timely manner; serves as Shift Commander and carries out the Lieutenant's duties in his absence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Monitors inmate behavior and enforces institutional rules and policies; prepares
disciplinary reports; resolves conflicts among inmates; uses positive reinforcement to encourage positive inmate behavior; completes routine duties, e.g., medical line supervision, perimeters, vehicle check-ins; completes appraisals (annual and semi-annual) of Shift Corporal; assists Shift Corporal with establishment of personal professional goals; completes monthly performance feedbacks and monitors progress toward goals; assists and monitors progress of Correctional Officer On-The-Job training; identifies relevant goals for tenured officers and assures goals are met; assures Probationary Officer goals are part of their monthly feedback; collects information on staff performance and assures this information is available and utilized by Shift
Corporal; serves as Shift Commander when Shift Lieutenant is absent, carrying out duties and responsibilities; directs staff in the event of an emergency or an emergency drill; serves as Security Representative at Team reviews; completes duties as Informal Grievance Officer; processes grievances in a timely manner; maintains associated records per grievance policy; initiates and forwards self feedbacks to the Shift Lieutenant; arbitrates and resolves intra-shift staff issues and conflicts, keeping Lieutenant advised; reviews, corrects and signs staff and disciplinary reports; assures that appropriate training points/routing are done.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of work details for corporal evaluations; knowledge of policies and
procedures for the Department of Corrections; knowledge of operation of control rooms; knowledge of the English language. Skill in oral and written communications; skill in interpersonal relations; skill in making valid decisions based on experience and knowledge; skill in monitoring and training staff; skill in providing internal and external escort services for inmates; skill in running, walking and standing for long periods of time; skill in the use of a computer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED, 18 years old and older and an US citizen. plus five years of work experience in correctional security including two years of work experience at either the level of a correctional corporal OR as a supervisor with responsibilities for directly supervising subordinate employees.

Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen and other pre-employment testing prior to appointment. All successful candidates will be required to complete an initial training period and become POST Certified within one year of Initial appointment.

Candidates will be required to submit to urinalysis testing to screen for illegal drug use and must successfully pass criminal history investigation and reference checks, prior to appointment.
