Brilliance Audio, the country's leading independent audiobook publisher, is seeking an experienced editor to research, acquire and develop titles appropriate for audio in diversified nonfiction fields including business, motivational, and self-help. This editor will drive the continuation and expansion of the company's line of nonfiction titles. Responsibilities include research, identify, evaluate and sponsor nonfiction titles that have bestseller potential; provide a rigorous publishing proposal for each title indicating content, competition, market, sales pitch and sales forecast; identify and contact rights holders of potential Brilliance authors, negotiate rights purchase; and participate in publishing committee and product development meetings in reviewing and evaluating titles proposed for the general publishing program.
Job Qualifications
The successful candidate should have publishing experience and knowledge, as well as 3+ years of book content acquisition preferably in non-fiction fields. They also must have extensive contacts within agencies and publishing sub-rights departments, with the emphasis on those which handle a great deal of commercial nonfiction. Additional skills include a diversified knowledge of disciplines in nonfiction, and the most commercial authors today. To be successful in this role, candidates must have the ability to develop and drive a publishing program to higher revenue growth and to base development of the program on consumer and trade customer market demands.
Additional requirements include a keen attention to detail and the ability to manage and execute programs from beginning to end is essential, as is a proven track record in maximizing value while minimizing spend. They should also possess the ability to operate from a company-wide perspective and focus on what is right for the company, and when possible, encourage cross-functional and cross-business brainstorming and project teaming. The right person will ideally also be highly analytical, have proven strong written and verbal communication skills, be detail-oriented and hands-on, and be calm in the face of fast-moving environments. Candidates must be flexible, have a can-do attitude to exploit the unexpected and to succeed in unpredictable situations. The ability to work under tight deadlines and on several projects simultaneously is also a requirement. A bachelor's degree is required, an advanced degree is a plus.
